ICE Out at the Grammys
A trend took place at last night's 2026 Grammy Awards show. Several stars set out to take advantage of those cameras and their fancy gowns to draw attention towards political happenings, particularly the recent immigration crackdown. In just the first month of the new year, the escalating presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) within the country has garnered significant attention around the world, and the grim deaths of citizens Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti have pushed protests to emerge. These protests have now made their way to the red carpet, as we have started seeing pins saying "ICE out" and "be good" pop up throughout the latest awards season.
This visual message then took part on the main stage in a more prominent way, as musician Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, otherwise known as Bad Bunny, took time out of his first televised acceptance speech to condemn ICE. Before he thanked his family, or those who have helped him achieve his success, he said, "We're not savage, we're not animals, we're not aliens. We are humans and we are Americans." Perhaps this was a sneak peek at what his halftime performance will be like at the 60th Super Bowl?

Personally I believe everyone should have the right to voice their opinions. A lot of these artist put a ton of effort into the work they do, and if on the night they want to get awarded they voice their displeasure and anger of the current political climate that is their right to do. I also thinks its important to call out behavior you personally find bad and harmful, as it allows for bad behavior to not become common behavior.
ReplyDeleteCelebrities expressing their political views on a national stage is nothing new and people should really be used to it now. They should never be denied that right to express their views because it's how they want to express their freedom of speech and either side of the spectrum can express their views so it's not like it is forbidden for the supporters of the ICE crackdowns to express their views too.
ReplyDeleteI’ve always seen celebrities as regular human beings with tons of social power, thus my feelings about them sharing their political beliefs are neutral. Indeed, every individual has the right to speak up and voice their opinions, however, is it crazy for me to say that at times celebrities sound extremely performative at these events? In my opinion, condemning ICE at the Grammy Awards show is not enough. I find this the same as posting an “Abolish ICE” infographic on Instagram with no real power behind it. If anyone with any amount of status wants to make a difference, then they should help directly impact the lives of those affected. This is a general view of course, Given the fact that I’m unaware about potential donations made by celebrities to families victimized by ICE.
ReplyDeleteI have very mixed opinions about when celebrities speak out politically. A lot of the time it feels performative and it feels like they are only doing it because they want good press. But everyone has the right to speak freely and even if it is performative it is better than doing nothing at all. Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio's speech was powerful and heartfelt. And many different celebrities showed their support by wearing those ICE out pins, but the question is how is that going to make a difference? People who are against ICE are still against it and people who are for it are still for ICE. It is a hard topic to form an opinion on but I do think that it is important to discuss it. Thank you for your post!
